"Who We Are in Christ" | Romans 8:14-17 | Frank Sung

We often let one negative moment — a failure, a regret, an old shame — erase ten blessings and cause us to forget what God says about us. This message is anchored in three words from Romans 8:14–17 that define every believer's true identity.
Adopted — God didn't bring us in halfway. Through Christ, we receive His name, full belonging, and a new identity that replaces every old label.
Abba — We are invited into intimate relationship with a perfect Father whose love doesn't slam the door when we fail — He calls us home.
Heirs — We share in Christ's glory and inheritance, making us spiritually rich even when life feels ordinary or hard.
The Big Idea: Stop living from old wounds and shame. You are more than just somebody to God.
Group Discussion Romans 8:14–17
1. Getting Started Frank shared how one small negative thing — spilled coffee, a critical word — can quickly overshadow ten blessings. Can you relate? What tends to throw you off most easily, and why do you think that is?
2. Adopted Old labels like failure, unwanted, ashamed, or never enough can stick with us for years. Is there a label from your past that still tries to define you? How does the truth of God's adoption challenge that label?
3. Abba Frank acknowledged that some people struggle to see God as a loving Father because of painful experiences with their earthly father. How has your relationship with your earthly father — positive or negative — shaped the way you relate to God?
4. Heirs Romans 8:17 links glory and suffering together. Has there been a season of difficulty in your life that you can now see God used to shape, refine, or redirect you? How does knowing you are an heir change the way you face hard times?
Closing thought to leave with your group: Where do you most need to stop living from an old identity and start living from who God says you are?
